Henry VIII’s French.

“Helas madam cel qe je metant,
soffre qe soie voutre humble svant;
ie seray a tousiours e tant que ie
vivray alt n’airay qe vous.

 

We gather from Henry’s spelling of French that he had learnt the language chiefly by ear.”
